Building a Simple Workbench for Your Garage
Every DIYer needs a stable surface to work on. A workbench does not have to be fancy, and you can build one in an afternoon from standard lumber. The most important qualities are stability, a flat top, and the right height for you.
Decide the size and height
A common bench is around 1.5 to 1.8 metres long and 60 to 75 centimetres deep. For a comfortable working height, stand with your arms relaxed and measure from the floor to your wrist. Many people settle on a height near the top of their hip bone.
What you will need
- Framing lumber for legs and rails (commonly 2×4 or 4×4).
- Plywood or a thick solid board for the top.
- Wood screws or bolts, and wood glue.
- A drill, saw, tape measure, square, and clamps.
Basic steps
- Cut the legs to the same length and the rails to length. Check every cut against a square.
- Assemble two end frames by joining the legs with top and lower rails.
- Connect the end frames with long rails front and back, using glue and screws.
- Add diagonal bracing or a lower shelf. This stops the bench from racking sideways.
- Fix the top with screws from below, or from above with countersunk heads.
- Check that it is level and shim the feet if the floor is uneven.
Tips for a better bench
Pre-drill holes before driving screws near the end of a board to prevent splitting. Use a thick top, since a thin one will sag and bounce when you hammer. A lower shelf not only stores tools, it also adds weight and stiffness.
Safety
Wear eye protection when cutting and drilling, and keep the work area clear. If you plan to hang heavy items such as a vice or a grinder, anchor the bench to the wall or add extra bracing.
A well-made bench will serve you for decades. Take care over the first cuts, and the rest will fall into place.
